More than 18,000 people a minute tweeted about the royal baby as he made his first public appearance with his parents, Twitter said.
The figure was short of the peak of 25,300 tweets per minute which mentioned the baby on the social network on Monday night after his birth was announced, it said.
The total number of tweets posted about the baby runs into the millions, Twitter said, with its figures showing more than two million were posted up to Monday night. More up-to-date figures are not yet available.
The baby's first appearance with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was also "live-tweeted" by the Royal Family's official @ClarenceHouse Twitter account, which provides updates about the couple, The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince Harry.
The account has more than 354,000 followers around the world.
Politicians and celebrities have used the medium to congratulate the royal couple on their first son's birth.
Prime Minister David Cameron, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Labour opposition leader Ed Miliband all sent their own messages, as well as other figures including the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and the prime minister of Canada, Stephen Harper
Showbiz figures including singer Cheryl Cole, model Cara Delevingne, former Spice Girl Emma Bunton, Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda Holden and television presenter Phillip Schofield have been among those to offer congratulations.
